Gold Rush!!! (Opener)

Lord Have Mercy!

That was my reaction when I saw the conditions off of Eddy's Jetty. 10-15mph E SE wind so I went to the corner of the North Jetty. I thought it was going to be a serious whack fest, turns out the fishing was just OK.

I started casting a couple of minutes past midnight throwing a purple perch Husky Jerk because I whacked them hard on that color in similar conditions in 2007 (and 2007 Part Deux). That didn't pan out so I switched to a gold husky jerk.

After about 10 minutes it was "fish on" and I landed it.

It went 23" and had to go back because it was in the protected 18-28slot.

About 10 minutes later it was fish on again.

This one went 19"

I went for about 15 minutes without a bite, so I switched to a glass perch color and I got two on that.


This one, both pictures, went 25" and was big fish of the night.

This one went 24.5

I then had a long lull and tried several baits before getting this 22" on a white Shallow Shad X-Rap.


I got this last fish around 2:15AM. Soon after that my upper back started to really bug me and by 3AM I had to give up the rap throwing.

I went on got my bobber rod and went up the center jetty and fished the North harbor mouth. There had been 3 guys fishing at the North harbor mouth from the North Jetty and they got a total of 4 Eye's. After about an hour I got a bite and missed it. I quickly put on another leech and cast back to the same spot. Sure enough it got picked up and I reeled the slack and set the hook. This one looked like and eater, but it got off. That was my last bite. I stayed till a little after 6:30am but the fish were just not going like I would think they should be.

Mille Lacs, Platte Lake Dock N Slop

Went to Eddy's Jetty on Mille Lacs. The SE wind was probably too much for topwater and I didn't get any hits on a spinnerbait, so this trip was a skunk.

My first stop at Platte Lake per usual was at Jenny's from shore. Right away I missed a good bite on a white Sizmic Toad. I didn't hook the fish so I thought I could get it to bite again, but the Toad didn't get a 2nd look. After working the area I went and got a "Grapes of Wrath" Tru-Tungsten Mad Maxx. I cast to the area where I missed the strike and slowly brought it to the edge of the opening when WHAM. Fish ON!

Next I headed to the lake place. Fishing from the dock I had a hit on the Sizmic Toad that didn't get it and I couldn't get the fish to go a 2nd time, probably a pike. I thought the wind was blowing out of the SE so I took the boat to go fish docks by the Platte Lake public access. Turns out the wind was out of the E NE so I was actually getting blown along the docks and a bit towards shore. On the first dock I thought I had a hit twice, but both hooksets came up empty. On the 2nd dock I picked up a 13" bass on a junebug crawtube. On the 3rd dock I got a 20" pike which lost the crawtube body, so I put on a black/blue one. On my way around the dock I spotted the junebug crawtube floating, so I went and got it. It will need some Mend-It before fishing again. The rest of the docks I fished were a bust and I broke off the crawtube on a boat lift. I came to area with a sparse pad bed and I fished the white Sizmic Toad. I missed my first bite, small fish and then caught a 13" bass. The wind was blowing in pretty good to the slop I wanted to fish and I didn't get a bite. I headed to the other side of the bay (North) to see if the wind wasn't as bad. I went past the maidencaine in up by shore where there are reeds, pads, and bullrushes. I missed the first 3 strikes I got on the Sizmic. Finally I picked up a 14" bass on a "Big Sexy" Mad Maxx frog along the bullrush edge. A little farther down I picked up another 14" on the Sizmic Toad off the very last edge of the rushes.

I worked my way into the rice and pads managing to miss the final 3 strikes I got. One of the misses was a choke on my part with the "Grapes of Wrath" Mad Maxx. I think that one was a bigger fish.

A little "Big Sexy"

Today I got out for a little big of shore fishing on Platte Lake. I only had one hit and it was while casting off our neighbor Jim's dock. I did catch the bass and it was about 14". The camera was in the car but at the time I was in bare feet because Jim's dock is partly under water. I figured it was too much hassle to go and put my shoes on and run to the car for a picture. So far I am 3 for 4 on Mad Maxx strikes where the fish gets the lure in it's mouth.

If you didn't guess I got it on the Tru-Tungsten Mad Maxx in "Big Sexy" color.

Vikings Football Vikings Frog

Tonight is the 1st Vikes Pre-season game and I got out and did some fishing with the Snagproof "Viking Frog" when I went to check to see if there was water in the Trophy (boat).

Off the dock at the lake place I got about 15.5" largie. At Jenny's I started out missing 5 straight strikes, but I think I managed to catch those 2 fish plus one more. The first was a skinny 17+", the 2nd and 3rd were 14+".

Shore Nuff

Tonight I went to the lake place to make sure the boat wasn't filled with water due to a couple of storms in the last few days and naturally I brought my frogging rod along to try and catch some fish. The frog tied on the end of the line was Snagproof Viking which is a purple frog with yellow in the legs. I didn't take the boat out. I only fished from shore and off the dock. On about my 3rd cast I got this 13"+ largie.


On a cast over by Sherman's dock I got a 12"+ and in front of Jim's dock I had something, probably a pike, swipe at the frog.

I also fished for a couple of minutes at Jenny's and caught a 13" largie.

Shore Mille Laction & Jenny's

Today I had to go to Onamia so I figured I'd hit up the Eddy's Jetty and try for some smallies. When I arrived at Eddy's around 5:30PM there was a little wind coming in out of the NE but not too bad. I started on the South Jetty and on my 3rd cast this 17.75" sally sacked the spinnerbait.


That was the only hit on the South Jetty, and after working through several lures I went to the North Jetty.

On the North Jetty I got a 14" just South of the Corner on the spinnerbait. Just a little North of the North harbor mouth I tied into another around 14" then I lost one about the same size and then a bigger one as I was trying to figure out where to go to land it. I think I had one more hit that didn't hook up on the spinnerbait. I tried some topwater and didn't get any hits, so I tried a tube on a Title Shot Jig and I had a good fish on that got off about half way in. I went back to the spinnerbait and caught one that was probably 14.5" then I got a 15.75" on the tube. I left around 8:15PM. My upper back got quite sore, so I need to head to the Chiropractor on Friday.

I had to stop at the lake place to check and see if there was water in the boat, and of coarse I fished off the dock and off Jim's dock. Didn't get any hits. There was a little bit of light left so I hit up Jenny's and I got a 14" largemouth on a Vikings (purple and yellow) Snagproof Tournament Frog. I kept the bass and gave it to our renter John who loves to eat bass.

Off the Dock

Tonight I went over to our place on Platte Lake to get some tackle for Saturday's Cass Lake Tournament and naturally I did a little fishing. I fished from about 8:35 to 9PM. I only threw a white Spro Bronzeye Frog. I started out casting along our dock and didn't get anything, so I went out on the dock and on a cast out front of Sherman's Dock (East) I had something nip at the frog in open water right before the rice. I cast back and got another boil, this time in the rice and I thought it might be a bigger fish from the disturbance it created. Actually I thought it might be a dogfish. I cast back a couple more times without results so I started fan casting.

I got the first fish which was about 14.5" casting almost straight out in the rice next to the boat path which is weed free. I worked my way fan casting all the way west, and then I cast back at Sherman's slowly walking the frog. Sure enough the 17.75" blasted it this time and so I got a picture.

As I was about done, I was slowly walking the frog back in the boat path and I caught a little hammer handle.

Note: I fished off the dock a few night's ago and didn't record the trip cause I didn't bring a camera. That night I got a 13+ inch bass and 26" pike out of the slop, both on the white Spro.

GOMH BAM!!!

Due to the rain we have had lately I went to the lake place to check and see if I needed to pump water from the boat. I didn't. Naturally I make a few casts at the lake place but didn't have any luck. Next I went to Don W's but the wind was blowing there pretty good and all I got was 1 bite from a sunfish on my Strike King KVD Pro-Model Tube black with red fleck. So off I went to the GOMH and when I arrived no one was there. I started off on the SE side and didn't get any hits on the tube or a Snagproof Frog. I crossed the road to the NE side and it was game on.

My first couple of casts under the bridge didn't get me anything, so I cast across the channel towards the bridge rip rap. I felt some weight and waited until there was a couple of tugs at the rod tip before I set the hook. The fish jumped and I knew I had a good one, which I landed.

NICE BULLHEAD!!!

For once I didn't have a ruler or scale, but it was 18+ and had to be a 4lb fish. It was a brutus bullhead with big shoulders and fat belly. Very healthy fish.

I proceeded to whack 12 more on the tube with a single 12 incher and the rest being 13 to 15.5" with most around 14.5". The tube got so the screw in was no good anymore, so I just texas rigged it on the Northland Tackle Jungle Jig Loc Jig. I did lose 2 bullheads that spit the hook on jumps and 1 that spit it at the waters surface.

I now have lots of confidence in that Northland jig head.

Smallmouth Bass Mille Lac-TION

It was around 7PM when I headed out the door to go to Mille Lacs to try for some smallies. I stopped at Subway and ate, then it was off to Eddy's Jetty. When I arrived their were 2 guys fishing on the South Jetty, which is where I got most of my smallies last year. The center Jetty was also taken so I headed to the corner of the North Jetty.

BAM!!! It didn't take long. First cast with a wht/chart with wht&chart willow leaf blade spinnerbait and I connected with this 17.5" beauty


A couple casts later, BAM 19.25"!!!


Action stopped on the spinnerbait, so I picked up a blue/pink Monsoor Swim Jig with pink 5" Action Plastics Mag Grub and BAM, 18"!!!




I went back to the spinnerbait and had a hit but after a couple of seconds the fish was gone and so was my spinnerbait. I'm not sure if it was a Norman Speed Clip malfunction (Note to self, don't use Speed Clips with spinnerbaits) or if the spinnerbait broke.

Tried using the blue/pink Monsoor Jig some more without luck, so I switched up to a wht/chart Monsoor Swim Jig with pearl 5" Action Plastics Mag Grub. I quickly caught these two swimmers on that.

The 1st one is 12 and the 2nd one is 13"

Next came a long lull where I tried a Subwalk, SK Sexy Swimmer, Storm Kicken Stick, and a old school Frenzy jerkbait (had a hit on the Frenzy that didn't hook up). Nature was calling so I went to the porta john and then I headed to the South Jetty but didn't get a sniff there. I decided to go back to the North Jetty and try Berkley Frenzy Poppers, but it was a bit windy and the fish didn't want topwater. I then tried the Frenzy Jerkbait Again, a couple of X-Rap Shallow Shad, and a couple X-Rap jerkbaits. No luck so I went back to the swim jigs and on the wht/chart I connected with this 18.25"

The bugs were starting to get bad, so I left at about 9:30PM.

Not bad for some shore fishin'!!!

Platte Dock, Bulldog, GOMH

Platte Dock:Tonight just after 7PM I headed over to our lake place to get my gear ready to go for tomorrow morning. Naturally I had to throw a few casts off the dock. Casting over towards our jerk neighbors dock I got these two fish.

I had a few other good bites casting that direction but didn't hook up. I think several of the bites were from a pike because the Zoom Super Flukes were getting all ripped up. I also caught another 14" or so inch bass casting towards our cool neighbors dock.

Bulldog:
I arrived at Bulldog right about 9PM and immediately landed 3 small bass on a couple of different swim jigs.

GOMH:
A little surprising that there was no one fishing at the bridge when I arrived. In the 15 minutes I fished I landed 4 jumpin bullheads. This one was the 1st and biggest.
The 4 jb's were caught on 2 different swim jigs.

Rock Dockage

After last night's snow the day turned out to be cool but sunny and I don't think it was as windy as forecast, but then again I didn't get out until after 6PM. My first stop was the Rock Dock. I talked to a guy who was coming off the water with his boat and he had gotten 8 crappies in a spot and then they turned off and he couldn't find anymore. The guys Grampa used to have a cabin on the lake and so he has been fishing Rock his whole life and he knows several places that hold crappies, but he only got them in that one spot.

After he left I got down to fishing and my first fish was this hammer handle caught on a glow Cubby and a minnow.


About half an hour later I got this little bass on just glow Cubby without a minnow
About 15 minutes later I got another bass about the same size and when I lifted it out of the water the line broke sending the little bass flopping on the dock. I quickly tried to grab it so I wouldn't lose my Cubby Jig. While I was trying to grab it, the bass flopped around knocking the Cubby out of it's mouth and right off the end of the dock into about 3 feet of water. I grabbed the fish and let it go and I could see the Cubby standing up on it's head at the bottom. I got a small X-Rap and reeled it up to the rod tip and stuck the rod in the water in an attempt to snag the jig. By some stroke of luck I caught the hook and brought my Cubby jig to the surface.

I retied the glow Cubby and decided to forgo minnows. I got a few more bites, but kept missing the fish. Eventually I landed this sunfish which was close to the dock.

Around 8:40PM I decided to make a run to Bulldog and then the GOMH. I got nothing at Bulldog and in a bad sign there wasn't a soul fishing the GOMH. I didn't get a bite there either but I only fished it for about 15 minutes.

A Bit of Action

Tonight I got out of the house after 6PM and my first stop was Rock Lake. Today had been overcast with a little bit of rain, but by the time I was out the skies had cleared and there was a 5mph breeze out of the South.

At Rock I hooked up with a couple of bass on a glow Cubby and a minnow.
This little guy was followed by a 15 inch chunk that I didn't take a picture of. I think I may have caught that chunk bass earlier this year.

It was after 7PM when I headed to Bulldog, but that was dead so on to the GOMH. When I arrived at the GOMH there was just 1 car and a lady was fishing on the SW side with worms. I went to the SE side. I don't think she had caught anything and at the first sign of lightening and thunder to the SW she bailed.

I nabbed a couple of 14 inch class jumpin bullheads on the glow Cubby with a minnow and then Rapala Boy and his dad showed up. Right after they got there my bobber went down and I landed this smallish (8") silver bullhead.
I had this one little spot that seemed to be holding fish and I landed a couple of jumpin bullheads, the bigger of which was this 15inch chunk:


Like I said earlier there was a storm heading are way and the skies got darker and there was a lightening show with a bit of thunder. You would have thought the fish would have gone berserk, but I caught one last silver bullhead and that was it.
This fish was about 10" and I would have kept it had I gotten a few more, but back to the lake it went. Rapala Boy and his dad really didn't catch anything. It started to sprinkle a little and so I bailed before it started pouring.

Tonight's Fishing Report

Today I went to the Chiropractor and talked to him about my fishing related back pain issues and he is pretty sure he can do something about it. Getting some relief would sure be nice.

Today was sunny and mild with fairly light winds, so I was hoping the fishing was going to start changing for the better. I got out of the house around 6PM and headed to Rock Lake.
I started out by keeping my streak of little fish alive with this pike. Other than that Rock was dead and the "Rock Dock" is still not in the water. I have initiated trying to get hold of the DNR to find out what the deal is with the docks not being out yet, but I haven't heard back.

About 7:15PM I headed to the GOMH and the only person there was Grumpy Old Man Willard who was sitting in his mini-van. After talking to Willard for a few minutes I headed down to fish and decided to start on the SE side and see if I might be able to catch a dogfish. I didn't catch anything, so I made the decision to head to the NE side and try there for dogfish. I got bit right away and got this scraggly looking bullhead.
No the fish is not dead, it just has a dead right eye and it looks like it has paid the price for not being able to see on that side.

On a subsequent cast my 3/8oz black/red Terminator jig with black/red Chiggar Craw got bit off my something. Unfortunately I had no more black/red Terminator jigs with me. So I went back to the car and got my "bullhead" color All Terrain Swim Jig. I call it bullhead color because that is what I think it's shade of brown would represent. I think I got one jumping bullhead and some little fish of some kind were grabbing the grub or the skirt. I made a switch to the Storm Wildeye Swim Shad to see if these little fish would hit that but I came up with nothing. Next I tied on the smallest size panfish Chatterbait and I caught a couple of small jumpin bullheads on that. There were some swirls that I thought could be dogfish and I wasn't getting anything to go on the bullhead All Terrain, so I went to the car and got a white Terminator and tipped it with a blk/red Chiggar Craw missing one claw. I think I got 3 jumpin bullheads on this and no bites from a doggy even though I think there is a pretty fair chance I was casting at one due to a bigger fish that swirled while chasing baitfish. I also saw something surface out in a place where I've seen dogfish before, but that was beyond casting range.

It was getting to be silver bullhead time so I switched to a glow Cubby with a minnow and promptly caught a couple of more jumpin bullheads. I went back over to the SW side, but it was dead.

Beautiful Full Moon rise tonight.

Slow GOMH

I think Pete and I arrived at the GOMH around 6:30PM and we set up on the SW side. By this time in the day it was mild with a fairly significant wind out of the SE that would die towards sunset. There were 2 guys on the SW side and a group of 5 somewhat young (late teen early 20's) guys and girls on the SE side.

I started off the night with my smallest jumpin bullhead of the year so far.


Eventually Pete started getting some action from the jumpin bullheads, including this nice 2+pounder.



Eventually the 2 guys down with us left. Grumpy Old Man Willard showed up and so did Rapala Boy and his Dad. About 7:30PM Rapala Boy's younger sister and Mom showed up.

Generally speaking the fishing was slow. I missed a few bites including 1 good silver bullhead for sure and all I caught after the jb was this one small bullhead:


Pete had the hotter hand with about 4 jumpin bullheads and 4 silver bullheads (2 of which were keepers). Rapala Boy's Dad caught a couple of keeper silvers and one throw back, Rapala Boy got a couple of keeper silvers, and a boat with a couple of teenagers brought in 3 silver bullheads for Rapala Boys Family. A guy who was on the SE side gave Rapala boys family another silver and Pete gave them his 2 keepers.

Kids Night at the GOMH

I should have known something was up when a young girl was getting minnows ahead of me at Bear Traxx tonight. Pete and I got out of the house around 6PM stopped at Bear Traxx for bait and were at the GOMH by 6:30PM. When we arrived Grumpy Old Man Willard was there along with the lady (grandmother it turns out) and girl who were at the GOMH the other night; the lady knows Willard. Also Rapala Boy was there with his Dad and younger sister. Another young kid showed up around 7:15PM.

Pete took up a spot on the SW side of the bridge and I just watched for a while as the SW side was kind of full until Rapala Boy and the young girl from Bear Traxx went over to the SE side. I was fishing in "my spot" by 7PM. "My spot" is a couple of rocks that are easy to stand on towards the Western most area of fishable water before the bullrushes start. Maybe I will take a picture of the rocks (stay tuned for that).

As per usual things started slow. Some of the others missed bites and Pete and I had break offs where we had to work to retrieve our bobbers. I believe the Grandma got bit of once or twice. I had yet a second Cubby stolen by a pike and I had enough of that, so I tied on a green hook.

I got my first bite after 7:30PM by a small toothy bullhead. That was followed up by a couple of tiger bullheads (Yes I said it, tiger bullheads). Then I got into 3 jumpin bullheads, including this 17inch class fish.


The silver bullhead fishing was slow on the SW side. I think Rapala Boy's family caught 3 maybe 4 silvers. The grandma and young girl may have been skunked completely, they left around 8PM and Pete got completely skunked.

I got this one huge bullhead.

GOMH Report w/Pete

Pete went and did Guard stuff in St. Cloud and wasn't back by after 5PM so I headed out around 5:30PM. The Bulldog Lake access was occupied so I headed to the GOMH. Grumpy Old Man Willard was there sitting in his mini-van. An older couple was fishing on the SW side and a couple of teenagers were on the SE side. After talking to Willard for a bit I headed down to get a place on the rocks on the SW side. The older couple said they were not catching anything. I started off with the Storm Wildeye Swim Shad which proved futile. A couple times the older ladies bobber went down but she missed the fish. Eventually I caught a jumpin bullhead on a pink Puddlejumper with a minnow. Tonight I learned those Puddlejumpers are not a very sturdy plastic. Not long after that the older guy got a jumpin bullhead. About 15 minutes later my bobber went down again thanks to a jumpin bullhead which I landed. Around 7:45 the older couple left and I moved my stuff onto the stairs. As I was getting set up a lady and her daughter showed up and Willard knew them so he came down for a profanity filled chat about some of the things that have happened in the aftermath of his brothers death in December. The girl caught a couple of orange bullheads.

I pulled in yet another jumpin bullhead and was bringing in another one when Pete showed up with his dog Sandy. Naturally Pete came down to fish. I think I got two more jumpin bullheads, including one nice 17inch class fish before Pete pulled in the first silver bullhead of the night. Right after that I brought in my first orange bullhead of the season. Inexplicably the lady and her daughter went to fish on the North side just as it was starting to get good. I landed a silver bullhead which ended up breaking my line, so I had to waste time retying. I got back after it and got another silver bullhead. When I was taking it off the hook, the hook ended up going right into my index finger and the bottom of the fingernail. I believe this was the first time in my life I have ever been hooked beyond the barb. I thought it wasn't going to come out easy, but Pete was able to pull it with almost no pain. Pete caught another silver bullhead and I missed a few bites and that was it even though we stayed a while after dark.

A Little Better Bite Tonight

I was out the door around 5PM and headed over the Jenny's to pick up an apple pie. Since I was as Jenny's I decided to fish from her lake access and I was rewarded with this bass on a brown grub.

Next I headed to Bulldog where I got a couple of bites but no hookups. Willard showed up and was going to give Bulldog a try for some sunfish. I threw about 3 more casts and headed to the GOMH. When I arrived there wasn't a single person there but there were a couple of boats in the Sullivan channel, naturally I took up my place on the SW side. I didn't get any bites for about an hour until I pulled in a small jumpin bullhead on a Storm Wildeye Swim Shad. Around 6:30PM Bucket Man's side kick, who I found out is named Kyle, arrived. There was also a couple on the SE side and they caught a couple of jumpin bullheads. I got a small toothy bullhead and made the mistake of trying to swing it up over the rocks and my line broke; Bye Bye Swim Shad.

A little after 7PM some guys out in the closest boat started pulling in some orange bullheads, jumpin bullheads, and even a silver bullhead. I think I had some orange bullheads messing with my minnow from time to time. Eventually my bobber went down and I got another jumpin bullhead. Kyle got a perch then the first silver bullhead and shortly after that Bucket Man showed up along with the family with the lady that fishes from the bridge. Bucket Man caught a silver right away and about that time Grumpy Old Man Willard showed up. Besides Willard there were a bunch of spectators tonight including an old guy who was giving Willard the business to everybody's amusement; It was a good old fashioned Grumpy Old Man throwdown basically. At some point I got two silver bullheads which I gave to Willard and one more jumpin bullhead. The guy and his buddy from yesterday showed up and decided to fish once they saw there was a bit of action to be had. I would say the number of silver bullheads caught more than doubled from last night. After it got kind of dark the bite seemed to quit and I left a little before 9PM.

A Bit of a Disappointment

Today the weather was a very nice Spring day, lighter winds and sun. You would think on a day like today the fishing would have improved, but instead it kind of took a step back as far as the crappies are concerned.

Here is the days story.

I hit the water before sunrise hoping some of them silver bullheads would be active in the morning. They weren't. I took up the SW side of the Grumpy Old Man Hole and all I could catch were a few jumpin bullheads. I got one that was 18+" and I think this one was 17."
Right around sunrise another guy showed up and started fishing the SE side. He did get a silver bullhead along with some jumpin bullheads and an orange bullhead or two. Eventually a guy who was fishing the SW side of the GOMH last night showed up. I didn't stick around long after he got there. I went home and went to bed.

About 4PM I headed out the door to get minnows, drop fish off at Jenny's, and go fishing. The Bulldog access had people so I moved right to the the GOMH. I was surprised that when I arrived no one was fishing there and so I set up on the SW side. I caught two toothy bullheads right away and then it was nothing for a very long time.
As the day wore on several boats arrived caught nothing an left and people started accumulating on the Shores of the GOMH. Grumpy Old Man Willard showed up and I gave him a tip about some orange bullheads and he actually fished, catching 1 real small orange bullhead. Also tonight was the first time I've seen Grumpy Old Man Lee Ander come to fish. Lee Ander got a jumpin bullhead soon after he started fishing. By the time prime time arrived there were 7 other guys on the SW side with me including the dude from last night/this morning, his buddy, Bucket Man, Rapala Boy and his dad. I think there were 3 guys including one of Lee Anders grandsons on the SE side and a guy or two on the bridge. Eventually a few jumpin bullheads started to get caught and a father and son next to me brought in quite a few orange bullheads on what looked like small hair jigs below a bobber. I managed to get 2 jumpin bullheads and missed a couple of other bites that very well could have been orange bullheads. For all those guys fishing I think I saw 7 keeper silver bullheads landed before I left a little after 9PM. I didn't get a single silver bullhead, not that I would have kept one for myself if I had.
