 May started out cool, windy, and wet. Pete came up yesterday with Trigger. Kaylee did really well for being a psycho. We had dinner at Porky's. I wasn't really into freezing for one bite if we were to get lucky, so we ended up just hanging out with the dogs in the same room, relaxing.

Pete switched out the ground fault interrupter.  Then he got a bug up his ass about cleaning the mower deck which resulted in us taking it off and him confirming to himself that we would need new blades.  It was super windy out of the South so Pete suggested we fish from shore, which was fine with me.  We arrived at the GOMH just before John W. showed up with a couple of buddies.  We didn't get anything and quickly split.   Nothing at the culvert.  Pete got a pike at the Inlet Culvert and had a bass miss his spinnerbait at the tree.  We went to the NE Sullivan Access.  Pete wanted to raise the dock, but we didn't have a wrench and a guy with a pontoon trailer showed up so we left.  We went back to the GOMH and Pete got a small jumper off of the bridge. I called Snatcher Tuma and he was fine with Pete coming along pre-fishing with us tomorrow.  We stopped at the Lake Place so I could pick up some stuff.  We got home around 6:30PM and Pete decided to cook spaghetti instead of going to Little Falls or Brainerd to get mower blades.

Pete and I got out today. The first stop was Don's point into Loon Sex Bay.  Not even a bite, Amazin!  So then we went to SPBI.  Pete missed a bite there.  Then we worked along the South shore and up the Westside.  The pike and bass turned on and we caught several at various spots along the way.  Got the biggest fish of NPBI.

Short Trip With Pete Tonight

Pete finally made his way North today.  He was supposed to get here on Thursday night.  When I arrived at the lake place the Trophy hadn't been pumped out, so doing that took some time.  Steve and Kim who had been out on the lake in the pontoon showed up.  Steve apologized for not pumping out the Trophy, which was appreciated but not necessary.  I should have just asked Pete where he wanted to fish.  I took us to the NW bay and Pete got ants in his pants as per usual when we aren't catching fish on a spot where I take him.  As we were headed out to the deep reed edge I got a 12-inch bass on the Sprinker and had the tail bitten off by a pike.  Pete thought we should play the wind but then wasn't happy with the boat speed as I went to move us.  So we stopped to fish the outer reed edge again, but it's total wuss weed in that location.  We then went to the reed bed off of Chuck's Point.  Didn't get anything there in 10 minutes, so we were gone to Loon Sex Bay.  We made our way in along Don's Point and Pete had what I'm pretty sure was a pike miss his frog.  I got the 15.5" off of the initial rice point on the Sparrow Bobby's Perfect.  I got two more small bass on the Bobby's Perfect as we made our way East.  Pete missed a couple good blow-ups.  I caught a small slimer over by LSP on Bobby's and that was it for the action.  Not that bad of a trip all things considered, except for Pete getting skunked.

Pete and I tried the Culvert and Inlet first.  Didn't get anything.  Pete missed a hit on the Sprinker KO at the NW Sullivan landing.  He then got two decent jumpers at the Grumpy Old Man Hole South side on the Piranha.  I got two small jumpers on a craw tube (brown/GP).  I also missed a few bites.

We then made it to the lake place.  Pete got a 12" bass casting the Piranha.  We then went to West Point.  Pete had a good bass jump off on the Piranha.  We then fished along Jenny's reeds. Pete got a decent sized pike just West of Jenny's.  I got a pike off of an East shoreline dock.  Pete got a few small bass and pike.  I got the 16.75", by the juice dock.

We quit fishing because the Vikings game started at 6:10PM.  They beat Peterson and the Saints pretty handily.

I didn't weigh any fish.

We finally got out on Sullivan.  The access wasn't in that bad of shape. I wasn't really sure where we were going to fish.  A lady was waiting outside her wheelhouse for her husband to show up with the truck to move it away.  We stopped and she told us they had gotten some sunfish and perch, so we stopped right there.  Basically in the area where I've caught sunfish and tullibee in the past.  I drilled some holes to the West and Pete went to holes that had already been drilled.  I caught a 6" gill first.  Then I got the crappie.  Which Pete wanted me to keep, so I threw it on the ice.  I caught another couple of gills and Pete caught a spottail shiner.  That gave him walleye on the brain.  I gave him my bobber rod, thinking that is what he would use.  His thinking was to get rid of the bobber and tie on a spoon.  Unfortunately, I didn't realize that was what he was doing until it was to late.  I, of coarse, had my jigging rod sitting in the bag I took the bobber rod from.  I was pretty frustrated by that development.  I went back to fishing after locating my bobber rig in the truck.  I caught a couple of nicer sunfish.  Fortunately Pete was a ways away and didn't see me catch them, so I threw them back.

After that I had a few more bites that I missed and Pete had the shiner stolen.  We had a flock of swans fly over when it was getting fairly dark.  Our Vex's went blank so we packed up and left.  Good thing, because I was getting hungry and I had that fish to clean and Pete had my crappies from last week to cook.

Pete wanted me to meet him at Garrison to fish after Bucks for Ducks, but I wasn't having any of that.  Good choice for me, as it was a total cluster for people trying to get off, not to mention all the standing water.

I ended up getting out later than I wanted too.  There were several trucks on the ice and the ice at the access seemed solid, so I drove on.  Obviously no problems.  I didn't use the Ion.  I was pretty much immediately marking fish in the waypoint holes.  I put the camera down and it was a mixed school or crappies and sunnies; I was really on top of them.  I got a few crappies on the Demon with the minnow and on the Fly with Jamei.

 Mostly the fish just milled around.  I did get a few sunnies and 1 perch.  I had 1 pike come through.  It disappeared by the time I put a spoon down. The fish pretty much split by 5:30PM.  I did pick off a few more.  Once it got dark it got tough.

Pete was running late per usual, so I headed out by myself a little after 3PM.  I went to the juice.  Couldn't get anything to go on topwater.  The first cast on the bluegill Pure Poison with a Swamp Gas Grass Pig got me a small pike.  A guy was running his leaf blower, which was so darn annoying, and then the girls from last night came out and started singing together, ugh.  I got over by where the last dock used to be in the water.  I got two bass (13.5, 16) there on the Poison.

  I got one more pike as I worked my way back across the flat.  At 4:45 I headed in to pick up Pete who brought chicken.  We were off by 5:30 and briefly hit West Point.

I then headed for the juice.  Pete tied on a Skitter Pop and almost immediately got nailed by a good fish toward the reeds.  The rod he was using didn't have much backbone to it, and the fish got off.  I started throwing the Bubble Walker.   I had one hit me in the reeds and swim at me at Mach 1 and got off.  I had one miss, but I stuck with it and landed the 17.75", which, as you can see, was a true chunk.

Pete missed another one.  I had something look at it, but it wouldn't take it.  I got a small pike over the flat.  The girls were playing music rather loudly most of the time.  I had one more good one get off in the reeds.  Pete wanted us to chase some busting fish way away from the juice (in the wrong direction), so against my better judgment, I did that.  It produced nothing, and by the time we got back, it was too late. There really weren't that many busting fish tonight.  We just happened to luck into them tonight.  Pete thought he heard a bullet go by us after a gunshot, so we got out of there.

Didn't get anything at the GOMH.  It was quite windy there.  Went to the lake place.

Got the pike out front of the dock on the Herb's Dilly and missed 3 bites as well.  That convinced me to take the boat out.  I got a couple nice pike on a Horny Toad over past Beaver Point.  I then drifted out into the reeds.  As I was nearing the end of the point I got my Labor Day Lunker. I was satisfied with the trip at that point and went in.

Pete's buddy bailed on him due to the forecast of rain, so he is back at our place.  I took him out in the Trophy.  I missed tow or three fish on the Horny Toad.  He told me about a tree over by the West Point.  So we made our way there even though it was getting dark beyond what I prefer to fish in due to the skeeters.  Lo and behold Pete caught a Labor Day Lunker too.

So Pete and I went out fishing again.  I started on the SW side and Pete on the NE side.  I didn't get anything so we switched sides.  I landed one and then another on the STX.

On the second fish I hooked my jacket at the wrist.  I managed to get the fish off, then made the mistake of asking for Pete's help in getting the lure off my jacket.  In the process of getting the hook out of the jacket Pete got a hook in a finger past the barb.  He then melted down in a hail of swear words and busted my pliers.

I wasn't to happy about that.   He got a hook in his finger, big deal.  Unfortunately it was Tuesday so Bear Trax was closed and Pete didn't want to go to the Clinic/Hospital.  I drove home and Pete cut the hook off leaving part of it in his finger.  He wanted me to drive him the the St. Cloud VA, but I wasn't having that.  So he packed up his stuff and headed to the VA in the cities.

I went back fishing and caught 4 more toothy's and saw a nice moon rise.

...After his Church retreat at Whitefish got rained out.  We didn't have a whole lot of success.  I think we got beat out by a group to fish at the Culvert.

Fishin' in a blizzard: 1st Trip 2005

Well some of the guys from the Fishers of Men got me to go out ice fishing today. We decided to head out on the big pond because we knew we could have plowed roads. Rumor had a good bite on 8 mile Flat. We met at the Onamia BP at about 10am and were fishing by by Noon. Mike Cummins, Pistol Pete, Goodrich, Vaughn, and 3 dogs were today's Posse. There was S and BS the whole time, close to white out conditions as we went back.

For our efforts a few bites and not much else. I landed 2 Perch, one of which was just shy of 13" and probably a bit over a pound. Got her on a pink Angel Eye spoon, at least I think that was what caught it. Nobody around us was getting much either. Had a few sniffers which may have been Eye's but who knows.

Ohh well, the road pass was only $7.50, kind of sucks when I need another ice reel and could get one right now for that price.

The BP is just not enthusiastic about icing Mille Lacs unless someone else is paying for that road pass or I am in a ice tournament where I can win something. Unless you know of a specific bite or have lots of experience on the lake, getting into em is such a crap shoot. I've never done super well there in the winter, I did however take 2nd Place and $100 in Gander Mountain Staff tournament a couple of years ago.
