Bullhead Night at the GOMH

14" Glow Demon w/minnow.
11:00-3:30AM
Conditions- Mild (55-46), clear then turning cloudy off and on, no wind to kind of breezy.

Yes I caught a bullhead tonight.  Had my minnow set a bit to low.

When I arrived there were two guys on the SW side.  I took up the SE side and got a good silver immediately which I gave to them.  Lantern Man showed up at the same time I was giving the bullhead away.  He came down next to me.  I was missing fish all night long.  LM had tackle problems and went home to get a different rod about the same time the two guys left.  I took my stuff over to the SW side and tried for dogfish, getting two jumpers on a D & M Piranha.  LM came back and stayed on the SE side.  He was steadily catching fish while I was missing them.  I went to bend out the hook a little on my Glow Demon and broke it.  I put a new one on and immediately caught the bullhead.

I started catching a a few quality silvers and help LM get his limit by about 1AM.  I got a few more silvers, not missing as many and then the bite shut down.  I got two more jumpers fishing for dogfish on the Piranha.

I kept one 10.75' silver.

Bet on Mille Lacs- Lost Again

23" Swamp Gas Grass Pig
7:30-10:15PM
Conditions- Warm mostly cloudy and a bit of wind out of the West.

Well instead of getting the Trophy ready, not knowing if I would be able to take it out tomorrow because of possible thunder storms all day I decided to take a chance on smallies being at Eddy's.  They weren't.  I got checked by a game warden and talked with a guy fishing with his son who fishes there fairly often.  He hasn't gotten any smallies there yet this year.  He did get some last year though.  I did rescue a sucker that got caught in a little spot in the rocks.  I left at around 8:40PM.  I decided that hitting the Whitefish Chain outlet gave me a good chance of catching a bass so I headed there.  The mosquito's were huge and thick.  I did manage the one pike.  I was quickly off to the GOMH.  Pretty much the daytime people were all gone replaced by people that had just arrived.  I went to talk with the wader guy and his buddy on the NE side.  He got one keeper golden while I was there and I'm pretty sure there was another fish in the bucket that he lied about saying they had just gotten there and not caught anything yet.  I did go down and fish on the SW side because a boat was parked practically on the steps on the SE side.  One guy got two genuine bullheads. I left at 10:15AM.

GOMH Bullheads and Bulldog Bass

Tonight I decided not to take the boat out and fish from shore.  I got out after 5:20PM and was to Bulldog by 5:30.  I landed a couple of bass there.

Next I headed to the Grumpy Old Man Hole.  There were only a couple of groups there when I arrived.  A guy and a girl on the NE side and a kid and his dad on the SE side.  I took the SW side.  The kid said they had been catching a certain kind of bullhead.  I got a jumpin' bullhead to start things off.  My second fish was a silver bullhead which I gave to the kid.

I then caught another two silvers, which I also gave to them.  I then got another jumper, then I got an orange bullhead
The guy and the kid left.  I was considering making the move when another guy with his kid showed up and took the SE side.  When they arrived an old guy and two other guys came and sat down next to me.  They were fishing last night and said they were getting lots of crappies on the SE side last night.  They only got 1 crappie on the SW side last night, but they were using wax worms and getting sunfish.  The guy with the kid got a silver right away and I was thinking I should have switched sides.   I landed a couple of jumpin bullheads and then got a silver which I gave to them.  I ended up giving them 7 silvers and throwing one back.  They got a bunch of orange bullheads and a few silvers.  The guy and his kid caught some silvers and jumpers.  After they all left I got 3 more including this dandy.
11.75"
I was going to clean it, if I could get a couple more.  But all I got was this bullhead, which wrecked my jig head.
It was 10:30PM, so I called it a night.

Peavy a Bust, Back to Rock

Tonight I headed out to Peavy Lake around 4:30PM.  I found a few bass and sunnies shallow in a little cut, but I couldn't catch anything.  Then I ran up to the North End as I started looking a guy pulled up in front of me and started going the same direction I was.  Spotted a nice sized pike and a single crappie. I got up by the guy and he'd never been on the lake before.  He saw a big carp.  I went passed him and found some small somethings up real shallow.  At 5:30PM I decided to bail.

I was on Rock just after 6PM.  As I pulled into the RPRO it looked like it was gonna rain.  I started drifting and got some sunfish, so I anchored.  The rain went just to the South of me then the sun came out and it got calm.  I missed a ton of bites getting 5 Sunfish total.  I threw them all back.  After 7PM I decided to try for dogfish.  I missed my first couple of hits, but they were probably pike.  Then I caught a couple pike on the Grass Pig.  I started also fishing with a Heddon Spit'n Image.  I missed my first few bites on that.  I then got a pike on the grass pig.  Then I got a bass on the Grass Pig. Then I got 4 bass on the Image, including this 17"
Then I got 3 pike and 2 bass and missed that many more bites on the Grass Pig.  I stopped at 8:30PM.  I don't think I came across any dogfish tonight.  One interesting thing was I went into the River and thought I spotted the pike that bit off my Grass Pig last week.  That or it had a white jig on it's noggin.

I went to the GOMH and got a bullhead and learned some info I hope to capitalize on tomorrow.

Midnight Trip Bullhead

So after I got done blogging my last update, I thought right then might have been as good a time to go fishing as any so I headed out.  Lantern Man was still there and he gotten about 6 more in the two hours since I left.  While LM was there I missed a bite and he got a small silver bullhead.  After he left I got one bite and landed this bullhead.  I gave up at 2:15am.

Toother and a Bullhead (for real)

Tonight I headed out to fish just after 5PM.  I set up on the SW side and got a little toothy bullhead.
A little while later the Meat Guy showed up and came and told me they started biting right after I left last night.  Ohh well.  The guys on the SE side got some orange bullheads and once it was getting dark got a silver bullhead.  Those 3 guys left and Lantern Man showed up, LM got a silver.  I stayed until 10pm getting one bullhead:

Platte Access Dock and the GOMH

Unfortunately I forgot to bring the camera,  would have had some pics.

I arrived at the GOMH just after 7PM and pretty much nothing was going on.  At about 8:15 I decided to take the advice from a drunk from the other night who said crappies bite off the Platte Lake Public Access Dock right before dark.  Now I didn't know whether to believe him, but I thought it was worth a shot.  I get there and  on the very first cast my bobber goes down, but I miss it.  I'm like hmmm, maybe the drunk was on to something.  Next cast bobber goes down and I miss again.  Next cast I hooked into a chunky 18" bass.  That was the last bite I got staying to 9:45.

Then I went back to the GOMH and Lantern Man was there with his daughter and the wind was down to nothing.  They had gotten 5 silver bullheads.  Right away I smacked a slab and thought this might be good.  Didn't get a hit again until about midnight and I missed it.  It was getting to be about 12:15AM and I was just about to give up when I caught another silver bullhead.  I caught 2 more in pretty short order;  all of them were right up on the rocks.  At 12:30 I caught an actual honest to goodness bullhead and decided to call it a night.

Double Trip

Weather: This morning started with a thunderstorm right when I wanted to go fishing at first light. I managed to make it out from 6:30am to 8:30am. There was a pretty good NE breeze blowing.

In the evening I arrived at the GOMH at about 8PM, there was thunder in the distance but it was dead calm and only sprinkled for a bit.

On the morning trip I fished the SW, SE, and NE side getting nothing but jumpin bullheads and one small tiger bullhead. I think the thunderstorm along with the NE wind blew the silvers right out.

When I arrived at the Grumpy Old Man Hole it was full up with people on all sides of the bridge. GOM Willard and Bud were there along with Bucket Man, Kyle and son John W. plus a bunch of others. Not much was going on at first and I decided to watch. Apparently CO Kuske was there earlier and pinched a guy who didn't have a fishing licence. At about 8:20pm some of the guys on the SW side started getting some. By 8:45pm they had turned on and I just watched. When Bucket Man, Kyle, and John left the SW side I went down there. All I caught was one bullhead bullhead fishing from about 9:30pm to 10:30pm.

Bullheads- No Kidding Around!

Weather: We had thunderstorms in the morning or I would have gone out. The rain quit about 8:30AM. The day was cloudy, breezy, and mild with a high of 63°F.

After a feast of silver bullhead for supper I headed out and arrived at the Grumpy Old Man Hole around 7:30PM. No surprise it was busy. The Bud the foul mouthed Grumpy Old Man was there, along with "Bucket Man" who now sits in a chair, a new guy this year who I'll call Turkey with his kid, and then there were several others fishing as well. I set up next to GOM Bud up on the bridge South side. Silver bullheads were coming in everywhere sporadically and after about 10 minutes I got my first and gave it to Bud.

I would give him a total of 3 and also get a 14" bullhead from the bridge. Around 7:50PM Grumpy Old Man Willard showed up. Round about 8:30PM Turkey and son left, so I went down on the SW side were they were. That turned out to be a bad move as I couldn't figure the fish out. Bucket Man filled his limit and I caught a little silver and missed one. Bud managed to fill out his limit up on the bridge. Some other young guys fished the South side of the bridge and got a couple of silvers and jumpers. The people on the SE side were getting fish, but by 9PM it was pretty much just me and Willard and those young guys who were now fishing the North side. Willard suggested I go to the SE side, so I went and tried that. Willard told me that GOM Lee Ander can't drive anymore because of his eye sight and it isn't very likely that he will fish at the GOMH anymore.

After about 5 minutes on the SE side I got a nice silver bullhead. Willard almost took it, but it went back in the lake. Willard left shortly after that. I started nailing a few silvers including this 12.25" fish.

Around 10PM the action slowed, but I did catch a bullhead. Yes a real live bullhead.

I had 3 more bites that I couldn't hook and I left around 10:30PM.

All in all I got
11 Silver Bullhead
1 Jumpin Bullhead
1 Yellow Bullhead
